A complete shutdown was observed and a protest rally was held near Main Chowk on Thursday against the police for arresting some local boys in an alleged eve teasing case. The protesters also clashed with the police.
According to eyewitnesses, on Tuesday evening at 5.45 pm a girl was returning her home when a non local policeman (Kashmiri) in his civvies started teasing herl near SBI lane. He passed lewd and vulgar remarks against her. On reaching home she narrated entire incident to her family. She along with her family elders went to the police station to file the First Information Report (FIR) against the said person.
The police tried to dissuade the complainants and advised them not to insist for registering the charge against the said policeman.
Incidentally, several women leaders belonging to various political, social and religious groups held a press conference on Wednesday and alleged highhandedness of the district administration and police department. They also demanded severe action against the erring police official and sought removal of a particular police officer for his alleged arrogant behavior.
“We will not let this case to be hushed up. We will fight for the aggrieved girl till justice is meted out to her,” they asserted.
“We have given two days ultimatum to government for removal of a particular police officer,” T Angchuk said, adding, “He has been behaving like a dictator and is treating local people as his bondsmen.”
“The government will have to face the consequences in days to come in case the authorities don’t act swiftly against the erring officials,” he added.
Eyewitness further alleged that there is a simmering discontentment against the district administration and police officer because of their overweening and public posturing. (MK)
