Srinagar, May 16: In a remarkable feat, artisans from Kashmir have created Asia’s largest handmade silk carpet, sparking hopes of reviving the region’s renowned carpet industry. The gigantic carpet measures an astonishing 72 feet by 40 feet (2,880 square feet), nearly half the size of a kanal of land.
The ambitious project was commissioned a decade ago by Fayaz Ahmad Shah, a carpet dealer from Kashmir, who received an order for the massive carpet from a client in the Gulf region. Recognizing the challenges posed by such an enormous undertaking, a special loom was constructed in Wail Kralpora, Tangmarg area of Baramulla district, to facilitate the weaving process.
Fayaz Ahmad Shah, the carpet dealer, expressed his elation at the accomplishment, stating, “This is Asia’s largest carpet, and it is the first time such a massive carpet has been made in Kashmir.” He highlighted the challenges involved, including the need to hire a crane to lift the colossal carpet and a specialized truck to transport it to the washing bay, where it will undergo a month-long cleaning process.
Kashmiri carpets are celebrated worldwide for their intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and exceptional craftsmanship, and this extraordinary feat is set to further elevate their reputation. The carpet, a true masterpiece of art and skill, is considered priceless, defying any attempt to assign a monetary value to its grandeur and significance.
“Government support played a crucial role in the success of this endeavor, with the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT) providing valuable assistance in areas such as design, dyeing, and technical guidance. The director of IICT, Mr. Zubair, and his team offered their expertise and advice throughout the process, ensuring the highest standards were maintained.”
As the news of this remarkable achievement spreads, industry experts and enthusiasts alike are eager to witness the impact it will have on the revival of Kashmir’s carpet industry. The artisans’ dedication and unwavering commitment have not only created a stunning work of art but also instilled newfound hope and pride in the region’s rich cultural heritage.
