The delegation of the All Kashmir House Boat Owners Association, led by Chairman Mr. Manzoor Pakhtoon, Vice Chairman Mr. Bashir Ahmad Pala, Secretary General Mr. Manzoor Ahmad Kundroo, and former Secretary General Mr. Abdul Rashid Kolu, submitted several important issues concerning the welfare and preservation of the House Boat sector before His Excellency Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha.
The delegation strongly stressed the need for the rehabilitation and proper relocation of House Boat owners operating on the River Jhelum before the commencement of the proposed river cruise services, so that the livelihood of hundreds of families dependent on this traditional industry is not adversely affected.
The delegation also urged the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor to take necessary steps for declaring the world-famous Kashmir House Boats as a Heritage Asset, recognizing their historical, cultural, and tourism significance and ensuring their preservation for future generations.
Among other key issues raised were the allotment of space for a House Boat information and booking counter at Nowgam Railway Station to facilitate tourists, improvement of electricity supply to House Boat areas, and the resolution of other long-pending issues pertaining to the House Boat industry.
The delegation emphasized that House Boats are an integral part of Kashmir’s tourism identity and deserve special attention, protection, and support to ensure sustainable tourism and the continued livelihood of the families associated with this unique heritage.
