‘Entering wetlands without prior permission will lead to strict action’
Srinagar, Nov 27: While the thousands of migratory birds have flocked to the different wetlands across the Valley, the government has come up with a series of measures to ensure the protection of the winged guests.
As per the Department of Wildlife Protection, anyone found entering into the wetlands without prior permission will face a strict action and his entry will be considered as the violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
The Department of Wildlife Protection as per the Morning Kashmir has stated that the migratory birds from various parts of the world have begun arriving at the wetlands of Kashmir.
“These birds will inhabit and move between the wetlands during the winter months. To ensure their safety and protection, the Department of Wildlife Protection is entrusted with safeguarding these migratory birds. Unfortunately, some individuals with ill intentions attempt to harm the birds or disrupt their habitats,” the department has said.
However, to prevent such activities, the department has made it clear that no one shall be allowed to venture into the wetlands without prior permission.
“Individuals interested in bird watching must obtain proper authorization. This measure helps the department identify legitimate visitors,” Wildlife Warden, Wetlands Division Kashmir, said, adding that anyone found entering the wetlands without permission will be considered in violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and strict action will be taken against them under the provisions of the Act.
He added that the cooperation of the public is essential in providing a safe environment for these migratory birds during their stay in Kashmir. “By working together, we can ensure the protection of these magnificent visitors,” he added.
Pertinently, with the onset of winter season, the winged guests have started flocking to wetlands, seeking refuge from the harsher climates of Siberia, China and Eastern Europe while as hundreds of birds, including species like mallards and gadwalls, have already started arriving at Hokersar and other wetlands.
Migratory birds arrive every year to stay in lakes, marshes, and at least five wetland spots in Jammu and Kashmir, typically for about five months.
The annual migration brings not only birds but also wildlife photographers, hobbyists, and bird watchers who flock to these wetlands for a glimpse of the rare visitors and this winter season a good number of migratory birds are expecting as the temperature dips in the coming months, the number of migratory birds will increase.
Over one million migratory birds had arrived in Kashmir during last winter season.
