Authorities sets ball rolling for multicrore Jammu-Srinagar gas pipeline

Industrial pipe with gas and oil

SRINAGAR, DEC 29: In a significant development, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has approved the initiation of the bidding process for the development of a 325 km natural gas pipeline from Jammu to Srinagar.

The approval was announced following the regulator’s 130th Board meeting held on Wednesday.

The primary objective of this ambitious project is to introduce the use of natural gas, fostering sustainable development in the picturesque Kashmir Valley. The PNGRB emphasized the project’s importance in cost-effectively delivering this environmentally friendly fuel across the challenging terrain of the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Srinagar.

The proposed natural gas pipeline marks a significant milestone in the expansion of clean energy infrastructure in the region. Aligned with the broader national effort to promote the use of natural gas, this project complements the ongoing development of the natural gas pipeline from Gurudaspur to Jammu, currently being implemented by GAIL (India).

The pipeline’s purpose is to facilitate the supply of clean and environmentally friendly natural gas to the Kashmir Valley, contributing to the national commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development. This transition to cleaner energy sources is expected to stimulate economic activities in the region.

By providing a cleaner and more efficient energy source for industries, businesses, and households, the availability of natural gas is anticipated to contribute significantly to the overall economic development of Jammu and Srinagar. The positive impact on the local economy aligns with the broader vision of sustainable growth and environmental responsibility. Notably, the bidding round for the award of a license to distribute natural gas in the  Valley is currently underway. PNGRB stated that bids are expected to be received by mid-January 2024. This step further underscores the commitment to transparent and competitive processes in ensuring the successful implementation of the project, marking a crucial milestone in the region’s journey towards cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
