If Omar Government Fails to Act, We Will Gherao Secretariat on September 2 Over Power Hike, Corruption & Backdoor Entries l Manzoor Bhat
Srinagar Aug 24: BJP Spokesperson J&K Manzoor Bhat said people across Jamm Kashmir are already facing immense hardships due to frequent power cuts, rising costs and unfulfilled promises of the Omar Abdullah government. At a time when ordinary families are struggling to make ends meet, imposing an additional burden through increased electricity tariffs is completely unjustified.
At a time when Jammu & Kashmir is receiving substantial financial support from the Centre, including ₹58,218 crore in central grants estimated for 2026–27, and the UT Government has budgeted around ₹9,300 crore for power purchase, the people deserve to know why another burden is being imposed on them. The government has already been providing thousands of crores in subsidy to bridge the power sector’s revenue gap, yet consumers are now being subjected to a 6.83% electricity tariff hike from September 1.
Those supporting this power hike, particularly those who have retired after holding senior positions in the bureaucracy, may not feel that an increase in electricity bills is a major issue. But for poor and middle-class families, every additional rupee on the electricity bill is a serious burden.
The NC Government should be ashamed that instead of fulfilling its promise of 200 units of free electricity, it is doing exactly the opposite by increasing the burden on the people. The government must honour the promises it made to the public, rather than making life more difficult for ordinary families.
The BJP strongly warns the National Conference government to immediately roll back the electricity tariff hike and provide relief to the people.
If the government fails to act, the BJP, along with the people, will march towards the Secretariat on 2 September to strongly protest against this anti-people decision.
Do not force the people onto the streets to get their legitimate demands heard.
