Civil Society in Kupwara Protests Against Pakistan Over Civilian Attack Along LoC

Kupwara May : 15 2025 Members of civil society from various areas of Kupwara district including Taratpora Golipora Zachaldara Vilgam Magam and Handwara staged a strong protest on Wednesday against Pakistan following a recent incident in which the Pakistani Army allegedly targeted civilians along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

The protests were held in the main markets of Handwara and Taratpora, drawing scores of local residents, social activists and youth organizations. Demonstrators raised slogans condemning Pakistan’s continued aggression and violations of the ceasefire agreement. Many carried placards denouncing the targeting of innocent civilians and called for a firm response from the Indian government.

We strongly condemn Pakistan’s cowardly act of shelling civilian areas. It is unacceptable and a direct threat to peace in the region,” said a spokesperson for the Civil Society Handwara while speaking to reporters.

The protest comes in the wake of reports that Pakistani forces opened unprovoked fire on forward villages near the LoC, resulting in injuries to several civilians and damage to residential homes. The incident has triggered widespread outrage across the border district and renewed demands for accountability and justice.

In response, local authorities have heightened security measures in border areas and assured residents of adequate protection. Protesters also appealed to international organizations to take cognizance of Pakistan’s repeated ceasefire violations and the toll they continue to take on the lives of people living near the LoC.
