CM likely to flag off first International Marathon in Kashmir

Admin says adequate arrangements in place for grand event
Srinagar, Oct 19: All preparations are in place for the first-ever international marathon in Kashmir, which is likely to be flagged off by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday morning.

The landmark event, set to attract a wide spectrum of participants, is being hailed as a significant milestone for the region.
This marathon, the first of its kind in the Valley, will feature around 2,000 athletes, including 59 international competitors, who will run through the scenic landscapes of Kashmir. Athletes have the option to participate in either the challenging 42-kilometer full marathon or the 21-kilometer half marathon. Competitors from 29 states and Union Territories, along with participants from 13 countries, have registered for the event, underscoring its broad appeal.
Local athletes will also be well-represented, with approximately 30 to 35 participants from Kashmir itself preparing to showcase their talents. The international participation, combined with local enthusiasm, adds a unique dimension to the event.
The J&K administration has ensured that all necessary arrangements are in place for the marathon. A senior official confirmed that a significant number of security personnel will be deployed to guarantee the safety and convenience of participants and spectators alike. “We have made adequate security arrangements to ensure the event runs smoothly,” he said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is expected to inaugurate the event at approximately 6:00 AM. The marathon is being viewed as an opportunity to present Kashmir’s beauty, culture, and resilience on a global stage.
Raja Yaqoob Farooq, Director of Tourism, expressed excitement about the unprecedented turnout. “This event is a testament to our ability to host international competitions and showcase Kashmir’s unique culture to the world,” he said.
Farooq said that the marathon will send a message of peace and resilience, and the athletes participating will serve as brand ambassadors for Kashmir’s rich heritage, famous cuisine, intricate paper mache crafts, and luxurious Pashmina shawls.
International competitors are already excited about the experience. One athlete from Denmark, participating in her first visit to Kashmir, shared her appreciation for the region’s natural beauty. “The atmosphere in Srinagar is incredible. The people and food are amazing, and running here will be an unforgettable experience,” she said.
To ensure the marathon runs smoothly, authorities have issued a traffic advisory. “Participants are asked to park their vehicles at designated locations, including SP College Ground, SDA Parking, and TRC Football Ground. Temporary road closures will also be in effect along the marathon route to prevent traffic congestion and ensure participant safety,” the advisory reads.
