Decline in terrorism in J&K but need to remain vigilant: DGP

Cautions against complacency till menace completely eradicated

SRINAGAR, JAN 01: The Director General of Police (DGP) for Jammu and Kashmir, R R Swain, delivered a New Year message, underscoring the substantial decline in terrorism within the region.

Despite the positive developments, he cautioned against complacency, emphasizing that the threat has not been entirely eradicated.

In his New Year message to the police officials, DGP Swain stressed the importance of maintaining peace in the region.

“The challenge for 2024 is not to let the dismantled terror ecosystem take roots or resurface even marginally in any form,” Swain said in his five-page message.

He highlighted the need for a peaceful environment, stating that it is crucial for investments, employment generation, and the establishment of new enterprises.

While acknowledging the progress made in reducing terrorism, Swain cautioned against complacency. “We just cannot afford to lower the guard. The enemy is and will continue to try different tactics to derail peace. We have to defeat any such move before it takes root,” he asserted.

Addressing other challenges faced by the region, Swain mentioned the menace of drugs and narco-terrorism.

He emphasized the importance of relentlessly working to uproot this social evil, stating that it poses both a security threat and a danger to society.

In addition to conventional challenges, the DGP highlighted the emerging threat of artificial intelligence (AI) warfare.

He warned that this threat is expected to grow stronger in the near future and urged the force to hone their skills in technology and AI-backed policing.

Lauding the role of the police force, Swain acknowledged the sacrifices made by over 1,600 police personnel in the past three decades in the line of duty.

He recognized the unique responsibility of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in maintaining law and order on the streets while battling terrorists with and without guns.

The DGP concluded by expressing his commitment to supporting police personnel and their families in the face of pressures from individuals associated with terrorist and secessionist networks.

“We will do everything possible to fight any attempt to vilify you only because you are a member of JK Police,” he assured.

He emphasized the need for zero tolerance towards any activities or individuals endangering the peace, stability, and safety of the nation’s communities.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of displaying genuine empathy and compassion towards fellow peace-loving citizens.

Reflecting on the recent past, he noted that the primary challenge had been dismantling the terror ecosystem, with substantial progress attained. However, the current imperative is to prevent its re-establishment or any minimal resurgence in any form. DGP’s message resonates as a call for continued vigilance and dedication to maintaining peace in the region.
