SRINAGAR, SEP 15: Through Direct Benefit Transfer, Jammu and Kashmir’s Finance Department in 2022–2023 disbursed around Rs 1378 crore to over 39 lakh beneficiaries.
The inaugural issue of the Journal of Jammu Kashmir Finance & Accounts Society (JAKFAS), which Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha himself introduced, included an article on this development.
The 2013-launched Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) programme replaced the previous distribution method. The programme used IT to send subsidies right into the Aadhar-linked bank accounts of the intended recipients.
Since its inception, transfers of Rs 26.5 lakh crore have been made for federal activities across India. With the use of these direct payments, the union government was able to eliminate 9.4 crore beneficiaries’ identities from databases in March 2021, saving roughly Rs 2.2 lakh crore. These beneficiaries’ names were either duplicates, forgeries, or nonexistent.
The DBT has already grown over the past ten years from 24 projects in 43 districts to 200 central schemes and more than 2,000 state government initiatives all throughout India.
A senior Finance Department official said that the LG administration is is proud that in 2022–2023, over Rs 1378 crore has been distributed through DBT to more than 39 Lakh beneficiaries.
“It has significantly decreased phantom beneficiaries and stopped the drain of public funds while broadening the idea of social inclusion. This is an illustration of the transcendental significance that technology now plays in the world of finance and administration. These are only a few instances when the financial administration of J&K has excelled in the UT by utilising information and technology.”
“This illustrates the indisputable importance of a system’s financial management to the entire system’s performance. However, it went on to say that the degree of information available to its inhabitants about how their government operates and the amount to which they can hold the system responsible may be used to measure any democratic system’s performance.”
