Over 3,000 water supply schemes under execution in J&K
Srinagar, July 25: Amid rising temperatures and subsequent water shortages in some areas, at least 3,000 schemes are underway to ensure that every household in Jammu and Kashmir has access to water by the end of 2025.
A senior official of the Jal Jeevan Mission stated that some areas of Kashmir are experiencing water scarcity. “Even some water bodies have dried up due to increasing temperatures. All water problems will be resolved by the end of 2025 as over 3,000 schemes, costing Rs 13,000 crore, are currently being executed in Jammu and Kashmir. These are expected to be completed by the end of next year,” the official said.
However, officials acknowledge that one of the major challenges is reaching every household in rural areas, especially those that are scattered or located at high altitudes. There have also been reports of water shortages in various areas.
The Jal Shakti Department has appealed to consumers not to waste water or misuse it for purposes such as kitchen gardens, lawns, or washing vehicles. Consumers are also urged not to use online boosters to ensure equitable distribution of water in their respective areas. The department has provided telephone numbers for contacting officials in case of water shortages. It is crucial to adhere to the directives of the Jal Shakti Department to avoid further problems.
The Jal Shakti Abhiyan was launched by the Ministry of Jal Shakti in 2019. It is a campaign for water conservation and water security in the country through a collaborative effort of various ministries of the Government of India and state governments. The focus of the campaign is on water-stressed districts and blocks.
The Jal Jeevan Mission, a central government initiative under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aims to ensure access to piped water for every household in India.
