Fatal Case of Swine Flu Claims 57-Year-Old Man’s Life

Vadodara, Jan 03 : A 57-year-old man from the city succumbed to swine flu at state-run SSG Hospital.
The deceased was a resident of Manjalpur. He had tested positive for H1N1 virus at a private hospital from where he was shifted to SSG Hospital where he passed away on Monday.

SSG Hospital officials said that the patient was being treated for multiple diseases at a private hospital where he was tested for H1N1.
He was admitted to the isolation ward of H1N1 at SSG Hospital on December 31. “The patient was suffering from multiple ailments including Austin’s disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and heart disease for the last 10 years,” said Dr Devshi Helaiya, resident medical officer of SSG Hospital.
Before undergoing tests for H1N1, the patient had complained of cough, breathlessness, and vomiting.
When shifted to SSG Hospital, the patient was already critical. At the government hospital, he was on ventilator support before he succumbed.
The H1N1 flu, sometimes called swine flu, is a type of influenza A virus. Swine flu is a human respiratory infection caused by an influenza strain that started in pigs.

Hospitals cannot admit critically ill patients in ICU if they or kin refuse: Govt guidelines
Union health ministry issues guidelines on ICU admissions, stating that hospitals cannot admit critically ill patients if they refuse ICU care. The guidelines emphasize that ICU admission should be based on organ failure and the need for organ support. Criteria for ICU admission include altered level of consciousness, hemodynamic instability, need for respiratory support, and anticipation of deterioration. The guidelines also mention that patients with a treatment limitation plan, living will or advanced directive against ICU care, and terminally ill patients with a judgment of futility should not be admitted to the ICU.
