Brain dead man gives new lease of life to four people
Mohali, September 20: The organs of a 39-year-old man from Mohali, who was declared brain-dead last evening due to a brain aneurysm, have given a new lease of life to four people.
The patient was admitted to Max Hospital, Mohali on September 16, and was undergoing treatment for brain aneurysm and blood clots in the brain, he was declared brain-dead last evening. His wife agreed to donate his organs. The doctors retrieved 2 kidneys and 2 corneas which were fit for the donation.
A green corridor was created to transport the organs from Max Hospital Mohali to PGIMER and Fortis Hospital. The organs were seamlessly transported covering a distance of 10 km in 8 minutes.
One kidney was allocated to a patient at Max Mohali, who had been on the waiting list for almost 8 years. The two corneas were allocated to PGIMER and one kidney was allocated to Fortis Hospital.
The kidney transplant at Max was done by Dr Jagdish Sethi, director-urology, uro-oncology and kidney transplant services.
Dr Sethi, said, “The recipient is a 63-year-old male and has been suffering from chronic kidney disease. We welcome this decision by the donor family to have stepped forward and agreed to donate several vital organs which will provide a new lease of life to 4 people.”
Meanwhile post kidney transplant the patient is recovering well.
While expressing gratitude and emphasizing the need for more organ donations, Dr Pinak Moudgil, executive VP at Max said, “We remain indebted to the family of the donor who decided to serve critical patients even in their time of loss. Organ donation can save so many precious lives and I hope that everyone embraces this cause. We would also like to thank all authorities concerned like NOTTO and Punjab Police for taking swift action and making this possible.”
