Srinagar, May 18: As temperatures continue to rise across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, doctors have urged people, especially children and elderly citizens, to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses.
Dr. Mohammad Shafi, a physician, said the ongoing heat wave especially in Jammu poses significant health risks to vulnerable groups, including senior citizens, children, and people suffering from chronic illnesses.
He advised people to wear loose and light-colored cotton clothes, consume plenty of fluids, and include fresh fruits in their diet to prevent dehydration.
“Children and elderly persons are more susceptible to heat stroke, weakness, and exhaustion. Parents should ensure that children remain properly hydrated, while elderly people should stay in cool and well-ventilated places,” he added.
Meanwhile, Dr. Lubna, a skin specialist, said excessive heat and sweating can trigger several skin-related problems, including rashes, fungal infections, allergies, and sunburn.
“People should maintain proper hygiene, bathe regularly, and avoid direct exposure to harsh sunlight for prolonged periods. The use of sunscreen, umbrellas, and protective clothing can help prevent skin damage caused by excessive heat,” she said.
Dr. Lubna also advised people to avoid synthetic clothing during hot weather, saying breathable fabrics such as cotton can reduce irritation and the risk of skin infections.
Doctors further urged residents to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, confusion, high fever, or severe weakness during the ongoing heat wave.
