High-Level Committee Probing Nowgam Police Station Blast

Srinagar, Nov 21: The government has constituted a high-level committee to investigate the accidental explosion that rocked the Nowgam Police Station on November 14, killing nine persons, including an SIA inspector and a naib tehsildar.

Officials said the probe panel is headed by the Principal Secretary and includes senior officers from the Home Department, the Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone, the District Magistrate Srinagar and a senior scientist from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory.

Authorities said the committee has already begun examining the circumstances leading to the blast. They confirmed that experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory have already collected samples from a large cache of recovered explosives when the explosion occurred.

The explosives had been retrieved a few days earlier from Faridabad as part of an ongoing investigation. The blast took place inside the police station while the examination and sampling of the material were underway.

Officials said the high-level committee will review all technical, procedural, and safety aspects related to the handling of the recovered explosives and determine the sequence of events that led to the tragedy. [KNT]
