Brarimarg | 16 July 2025: Evening of July 16 turned arduous for the final group of Amarnath Yatris making their descent along the Baltal route. After completing the demanding trek and offering prayers to Baba Barfani, the pilgrims were looking forward to rest and reprieve. However, relentless rainfall over the past three days culminated in a major landslide at Z Morh, between Railpathri and Brarimarg, abruptly halting their descent.
More than a thousand yatris were stranded at Brarimarg, where the Indian Army swiftly set up relief tents, anticipating such emergencies. Soldiers greeted the exhausted, rain-drenched pilgrims with hot cups of tea, warm smiles, and much-needed reassurance — a gesture that brought both comfort and hope in the midst of adversity.
The worsening weather also triggered multiple incidents of shooting stones, leading to injuries among the yatris. As per initial reports, seven individuals were injured, with three sustaining significant injuries. The landslide at Z Morh blocked the ambulance route, complicating their immediate evacuation.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Indian Army detachment at Brarimarg launched a prompt rescue effort despite treacherous terrain and ongoing downpour. Among the injured was Ms. Kalpana Chandela, a 37-year-old pilgrim from Chharpola, Uttar Pradesh, who had suffered a fractured leg and was in severe pain. Braving the conditions, Army stretcher bearers raced to carry her across the landslide zone to a waiting ambulance at Railpathri. The two other critically injured yatris were also evacuated in the same manner by the determined soldiers.
Once again, the Indian Army has stood as a pillar of strength and compassion, going beyond the call of duty to safeguard the lives of fellow citizens. Their selfless actions underlines the unwavering commitment of the Army to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of all pilgrims undertaking the sacred Amarnath Yatra — even in the face of natural adversity.
