International Day of the Girl Child celebrated across Poonch District

POONCH, OCTOBER 11: Educational institutions across Poonch district observed the International Day of the Girl Child with a series of events emphasizing the importance of girls’ empowerment and education.

A major event was held at Shri Krishan Chander Memorial Government Degree College, Poonch, where Deputy Commissioner Vikas Kundal graced the event as chief guest.

In his address, the DC highlighted the critical role education plays in fostering gender equality, stating, “Empowering girls through education is key to building a stronger society.”

Students gave speeches on the significance of supporting girls in overcoming societal challenges, while also discussing the impact of government schemes designed for their welfare.

A parallel function was organized at Dinanath Rafiq Memorial Model Higher Secondary School for Girls, Poonch, with Chief Education Officer Lal Hussain as the chief guest. He praised the efforts of parents and educators in promoting girls’ education, mentioning the success of initiatives like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao. The students at the school also presented colorful cultural performances, underscoring the importance of girls’ education.

Addressing the gathering, District Social Welfare Officer Wakil Bhat spoke on various schemes available for the girl child, encouraging students to take advantage of these opportunities.

Institutions across the district held additional activities such as debates, essay-writing, and poster-making competitions to engage students on issues concerning girls’ empowerment.

A Taekwondo competition for girls was also organized at the Sports Stadium Poonch, attracting enthusiastic participation from students across various schools. The event aimed to promote self-defense skills and physical fitness among young girls, empowering them with confidence and resilience. Participants showcased their martial arts abilities in a series of exciting matches, with the winners being awarded medals and certificates of appreciation.
