Jamaat-e-Islami braces up for contesting polls again in J&K

Shura frames panel to decide on taking part in elections

Srinagar, Jul 23: Ahead of the assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir, the Jama’at-e-Islami (JeI) has entered into a conclusive mode to decide its participation in the elections after a gap of nearly four decades. However, the ball has been thrown into the court of a panel framed by the Shura of the organization to take a final call.
After some of the leaders from JeI were released, they stated that any decision being taken by the panel framed by Shura will be accepted unanimously; adding that participating in the polls is nothing new of JeI as it has contested the elections at all levels in Jammu and Kashmir nearly 40 years ago.
Ameer-e-Jamaat, Hameed Fayaz Ahmad has made it clear that four of the leaders from the organization, were in the jail where they have decided to accept the panel’s decision with regard to contesting the polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
“If the ban is lifted, the JeI will take part in the polls for which the panel has been framed to decide everything,” he said, adding that all the leaders are going to accept the decision of the panel unanimously.
“Taking part in the elections is nothing new for us as we have taken part in the polls at all levels in the past as well. In 1979 as well, Jammat took part in all the elections including BDO, Panchayat, Lok Sabha and assembly polls. Even the JeI was the main opposition party then,” he recalled.
Furthermore, he stated that with the passage of time, the organization needs to change itself and make it up-to-date.
Similarly, another leader, Faheem Ramzan, his Deputy has stated that the organization has been working peacefully since long. However, he added that about the participation of polls in Jammu and Kashmir,  a panel has been framed by the Shura to decide on taking part in the elections.
“At present, the ban on the Jamaat is in place and the panel has been asked to take decisions keeping in view all the parameters like ban and other things,” he said.
