J&K Aims for Solar-Powered Future: 100% Government Coverage by 2025

Srinagar, Oct 4: In a bold move towards sustainable energy, the Jammu and Kashmir government has set an ambitious target to achieve 100% coverage of its departments under the rooftop solar program by December 2025. This initiative promises to revolutionize the region’s energy landscape and set a precedent for other states to follow.
According to data , the solar revolution is already well underway. 3,850 government departments have embraced solar power initiatives, with 22,494 government buildings slated for rooftop solar installations. A whopping 04 MW of rooftop solar power plants are being deployed across the region.

A senior Officer of Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA), shared his optimism about the project: “We have set December 2025 as the deadline for the completion of the project. The motive behind this initiative is to endorse and motivate people for sustainable energy. Rooftop solar plants have been a success for us, and the initiative has been going on in various districts for years.”
This solarization project is more than just a government mandate; it’s a beacon of hope for a greener future. By reducing the carbon footprint of government operations, Jammu and Kashmir is taking a significant step towards meeting its climate goals and promoting sustainability across various sectors.
The initiative has gained further momentum with the government’s recent decision to make solar power panel installation mandatory for all its departments. This move aims to address the mounting expenditure on power dues incurred by various government departments, killing two birds with one stone – reducing costs and embracing clean energy.
To ensure the success of this solar dream, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has approved a Rs 400 crore project for installing grid-tier rooftop solar power systems on all government buildings in the union territory. Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo has called for the identification of all suitable buildings and directed comprehensive coverage under the rooftop solar program.
To streamline the implementation process, nodal officers will be appointed at both J&K and district levels, ensuring smooth execution of this ambitious project.
As Jammu and Kashmir races towards its solar-powered future, it sets an example for the rest of India and the world. With each panel installed, the region moves closer to a sustainable tomorrow, proving that even in the shadow of the Himalayas, the future can be brilliantly bright.
