SRINAGAR, FEB 05: Jammu and Kashmir government has allocated Rs 1,284.45 crore in the 2024-25 budget to ramp up security-related infrastructure and surveillance mechanisms across the Union Territory.
The budget provisions come amidst heightened concerns over cross-border infiltration and internal militancy in J&K.
The government plans to construct 42 new Border Police Posts (BPPs) in border districts to seal vulnerable gaps along the Line of Control. Work has already started on 21 BPPs, with 30% completion achieved and Rs 119 lakh spent so far.
14 new jails have been identified for installing signal jammers and dominant towers to prevent unauthorized communication by inmates.
On the infrastructure side, the budget has approved hostels for families of police martyrs in Srinagar (Rs 20.6 crore). Two new narcotics labs are being set up in FSL Srinagar and Jammu, while new divisions for physics and ballistics are being added in Srinagar FSL.
CCTV surveillance systems are being installed in police stations and border posts across J&K. The government is also implementing a GIS-based CCTV camera network in 17 districts for real-time monitoring and boosting coordination between law enforcement agencies.
Experts have welcomed the measures. “While the allocations are positive, the government must ensure speedy implementation and systemic security reforms for lasting improvement.”
The heightened focus on security comes amid Pakistan-backed efforts to stir unrest in the region. The budget allocations are aligned with the government’s robust response strategy to counter these challenges.
