Srinagar, Dec 11: Amid rising power demand during the harsh winter months, Jammu and Kashmir administration has sought additional electricity from the central government to address the growing requirements in the Union Territory.
Official data reveals a noticeable rise in power supply compared to last year. Between November 16 and November 30, the average supply was recorded at 1489 MW, an increase of 101 MW from the 1388 MW supplied during the same period. Similarly, from December 1 to December 4, the power supply rose to 1525 MW, a 60 MW increase from last year’s 1465 MW. Between December 4 and December 8, the supply further climbed to 1595 MW, marking a 145 MW rise from the 1450 MW provided in the corresponding timeframe last year.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, V K Bidhuri, acknowledged that electricity remains a critical issue during winters. “We have already requested additional power supply to address the winter demand. The administration is working at various levels to minimize unscheduled power cuts and ensure a consistent supply,” he said.
The Divisional Commissioner also stressed the importance of public cooperation, urging residents to avoid using crude heating devices, which often lead to fire incidents. “We need people’s cooperation to reduce such mishaps and related losses,” he added.
Despite the administration’s efforts, residents across the Valley continue to grapple with unscheduled power cuts and a worsening water shortage. Many areas report that irregular electricity has disrupted water supply systems, exacerbating their hardships during the freezing temperatures.
“We face long hours without electricity, and now there is a shortage of water too. The administration needs to address these issues promptly,” said Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Habba Kadal.
