Srinagar June : 30 The ongoing heatwave continued to grip Kashmir on Sunday, pushing temperatures well above normal across the Valley. While relief in the form of scattered rainfall is expected in the days ahead, the intense heat shows no signs of abating in the immediate future.
According to the Meteorological Department, Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded a scorching 34.5°C — significantly higher than seasonal norms. Most areas in the Kashmir Valley reported temperatures above the 30°C mark, barring the popular tourist destination Gulmarg, which remained cooler at 25.0°C.
Qazigund registered 33.6°C, Pahalgam 30.2°C, and Kokernag matched Qazigund at 33.6°C. Kupwara reported 34.2°C, further emphasizing the widespread nature of the heatwave.
In contrast, the Jammu division experienced relatively moderate conditions, with temperatures dipping below average. Jammu city recorded a maximum of 32.3°C — 4.7 degrees below normal. Other towns followed suit: Banihal recorded 29.8°C, Batote 28.3°C, Katra 30.2°C, and Bhaderwah 32.1°C.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, stated that intermittent rain and thundershowers are expected at scattered locations across Jammu and Kashmir over the next five days, lasting through July 5. From July 6 to July 8, these weather patterns are likely to become more widespread.
However, despite the forecast of occasional rainfall, no significant weather activity is anticipated, suggesting that the prevailing heatwave conditions will persist for at least another week.
As temperatures continue to soar, residents are advised to take necessary precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak hours.
