Bathinda: A 37-week pregnant woman suffering from dengue got a new lease of life after a successful medical treatment at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Bathinda thus ensuring her safe delivery. The case was led by Dr. Ritu Garg, obstetrics and gynaecology consultant at Max Hospital, Bathinda.
The 31-year-old woman was brought to Max in an emergency with dengue and labor pain. Upon arrival, her platelet count was critically low at 40,000. She was immediately admitted to the MSP ward under the supervision of Dr. Ritu Garg.
Understanding the urgency, single donor platelet concentrate (SDPC) was arranged and transfused to the patient. Following this, the labour was induced, and a successful delivery was performed.
Commenting on the case, Dr. Ritu Garg said, “Pregnant women can transmit the dengue virus to the fetus during pregnancy or around the time of birth. Dengue can have harmful effects, including fetal death, low birth weight, and premature birth.”
Dr. Garg further said that dengue cases are often observed more frequently in females than males.
This case highlights the importance of spreading awareness about the higher risk of severe dengue infections in pregnant women compared to non-pregnant women. Many pregnant women with dengue infection may develop dengue shock syndrome (DSS), significantly increasing mortality rates.”
Both mother and baby were discharged in healthy condition from Max Super Specialty Hospital, Bathinda, after three days.
