SRINAGAR July 16: In a major reinforcement of security infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has given in-principle approval for raising 20 new battalions of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The move, aimed at strengthening anti-militancy operations and maintaining law and order, will bring over 20,000 additional personnel into the region.
The proposal has already received financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance, and final nod from the Union Cabinet is expected soon.
This development marks a significant strategic pivot, as the CRPF recalibrates its deployment from Naxal-hit areas to counter-insurgency and law enforcement duties in Kashmir.
Additional CRPF companies are also expected to be deployed across key locations in the Union Territory in the coming weeks. Senior officials anticipate a broader security restructuring to further integrate CRPF efforts with local police and intelligence units.
The MHA’s decision is being seen as part of a long-term plan to enhance the Centre’s responsiveness to emerging threats in the region and stabilize the security environment.
