More CCTVs on Srinagar streets for ‘safety, regulation of traffic rules’

Srinagar, Jul 18: More sites have been identified in Srinagar city for installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras for real-time surveillance of traffic.

The initiative will help further in traffic management, crime control and decision- making regarding mobilisation of the police.

In the first phase, Under the Smart City Project, the authorities in the past few months have installed several closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and other devices in Srinagar city under the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) .

Sources said that the cameras are sending live video and photo feeds of traffic violations to a command and control centre.

“The system was to be installed at 60 traffic light junctions. This will spread across the city from Zakura (city outskirts on south) to Pantha Chowk(city outskirts in north). It won’t be confined to the city centre only,” the officials said.

An official of the police department said that CCTVs were already installed at several places in Srinagar for security . “Scores of places have already been identified for installation of new CCTVs,” the official said.

The official said that installation of CCTVs would “ensure” safety of people and “regulation” of rules.

“Monitoring of traffic violations is much needed to reduce the number of road accidents. There has been an increase in the number of road accidents and traffic challans in Jammu and Kashmir,” the official said.

Jammu and Kashmir has recorded 200 percent increase in traffic challans since 2010.

“Once the all CCTVs are installed, the number of traffic violators will be much higher and there will be more surveillance to see whether people follow traffic rules,” the official added.

“Once it will be fully functional, the traffic police personnel will keep a watch at important locations in the city round the clock from there and issue challans on the basis of automatic detection of violations through smart cameras,” the officials said.

“It will help in visible violations including automatic number plate recognition, red light violation, no helmet, triple riding, no seat belt, use of mobiles while driving and wrong parking,” the official said, adding that it will also capture picture and video. “CCTV Cameras at junctions will monitor and record all activity at intersections which help authorities to draft plans and make decisions for better use of road infrastructure. Face recognition applications support real time video processing and track the specified persons and match a suspect / criminal photograph available in the database,” the officials added.
