NOTA Steals Thunder, Outvotes Majority in J&K Polls

68 candidates secure fewer votes than ‘None Of The Above’

Srinagar, June 4: In a surprising turn of events, the “None of the Above” (NOTA) option has emerged as a frontrunner in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir. An interesting contest unfolded between independent candidates and those from lesser-known parties, as NOTA took a lead against the majority of candidates across all five Lok Sabha constituencies in the UT.

According to the details available on the Election Commission of India’s official website, the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat witnessed a remarkable scenario where 18 candidates garnered fewer votes than NOTA. In this constituency, a total of 5,998 voters opted to exercise their right to reject all candidates, surpassing the individual vote tallies of 18 contenders in the fray.
Similarly in Jammu Parliamentary constituency, 18 candidates have also secured less votes than of NOTA. A total of 4631 people have gone with the side of NOTA while 18 candidates have got less votes than it.
However, the highest number of NOTA has been pressed in Udhampur Parliamentary Constituency where a total of 12938 electorates have rejected all the candidates by pressing NOTA.
Against this number, 9 candidates in the fray except top three have got less votes than NOTA. In Udhampur Lok Sabha, only 12 candidates were vying for the seat.
Moreover, 14 candidates in the fray for the Baramulla constituency have got less votes than that of NOTA. A total of 4984 people have rejected the candidates in fray by pressing the NOTA button during the recently held Lok Sabha polls.
Interestingly, nine candidates from Anantnag-Rajouri seat have also failed to even defeat the NOTA as a total of 5967 electorates have pressed the NOTA button across the constituency.
Pertinently, the counting of votes was held today across India including Jammu and Kashmir. In J&K, nine voting centres were established by the poll body while one was established at Delhi to count the votes of Kashmiri migrant voters.
