Srinagar, Sep 05: From felicitations by the government to students posing as their favourite teachers and organizing cultural programmes and offering gifts, this is how the ‘Teachers Day’ was celebrated in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.
Every year, India celebrates Teachers’ Day on 5th September to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the country’s first Vice President and former President, scholar, philosopher, and Bharat Ratna awardee, who was born on this day in 1888.
In Jammu and Kashmir, schools witnessed a festive look where students had organized special programmes for their teachers. The students also held special events where students expressed their gratitude to their teachers through speeches, skits and songs. The students and teachers also delivered inspired speeches highlighting the significance of Teachers Day.
Bisma Jan, a student of Kothibagh Higher Secondary School said the students held various programmes on Teachers Day.
“We held various programmes to express our gratitude to teachers. Besides, we also offered gifts to our teachers. This was all to show our love towards our teachers who are national builders. It is only once in a year when we offer something to our teachers while the rest of the year they work on students to make us better people,” she said.
Adil Bhat, who is studying in one of the private schools said, “We celebrated Teachers Day to spread a message that we have to respect our teachers. Respect is the bond between a teacher and a student. Their status comes just after the parents.”
He said they took off a few classes and felicitated their teachers. “We also did various skits to praise the role of teachers.”
Similarly, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also felicitated 11 teachers from various schools of the union territory.
Five teachers were awarded silver medals and a cash prize of Rs 50,000 each for their outstanding services in the field of education while six others, including a specially-abled teacher, were given certificates of appreciation.
Sinha said a teacher is the biggest revolutionary and courageous person in this world. “A teacher breaks the barriers, old methods and gives a new shape, a new direction to the children, a new resolve and sparks new thinking in the minds of the children. The goal of education is not to create a competitive mind but to create a creative and curious mind. We need a fine balance between competition and creativity,” he said.
The LG said the teachers’ role is to also bring creativity inside the classroom. “They should be courageous enough to break the stereotypes and let young minds develop their own creative, innovative ideas and critical thinking”.
Director of School Education Kashmir, Tassaduq Mir said the Teachers’ Day was being celebrated to encourage the teaching fraternity to serve better. “We are celebrating this day to boost the morale of the teachers and recognise the services they render to the nation,” Mir said.
