Party-hopping season opens as J&K polls loom

Many leaders likely to resign, join other parties soon

Srinagar, Aug 23: Jammu and Kashmir has seen some major political developments following the announcement of three-phased assembly polls in the Union Territory from September 18.
The key leaders have been switching their parties ahead of the polls with the majority joining different parties to get a mandate in the upcoming elections.

Several leaders from three parties including Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Apni Party and Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) have announced their resignation and joined other parties ahead of the elections.
As per the details available, the leaders including former MLAs have decided to part ways from their respective parties in a bid to contest the upcoming elections.
PDP leaders including its Chief Spokesperson, Suhail Bukhari, former MLA Aijaz Ahmad Mir, Harbaksh Singh and Raja Waheed have recently announced their decision of quitting the party. Dr Harbaksh Singh has joined AIP while Suhail Bukhari has so far remained tight-lipped over his future course of action. Aijaz Mir would however likely fight the upcoming elections as an independent candidate.
The former minister Syed Altaf Bukhari led Apni Party also faced the jolt by witnessing the resignations from the leaders. The leaders include Choudhary Zulfikar Ali, Zaffar Iqbal Manhas, Abdul Rahim Rather, Tariq Ahmad Veeri and others parted ways from their respective parties.
Choudhary Zulfikar Ali has joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while Tariq Veeri has rejoined NC. The other leaders have not so far announced their future course of action.
The former chief minister of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad also faced resignations in the past one week as its senior leader and former minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din has resigned from the party and announced his “ghar vapsi” to Congress.
The party’s other leaders including DDC Chairman Anantnag; Muhammad Yousuf Gursi resigned from Apni Party and joined Apni Party.
According to the sources, the talks are going on with several leaders eyeing to resign from their respective parties and are mulling to join different parties to contest the upcoming elections.
