Srinagar, June 7: National Conference (NC) President, Dr Farooq Abdullah, expressed his views on the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, stating that the opposition in the parliament would be much stronger compared to the previous five-year term. He attributed this shift to the people’s mandate, which he believes has saved the Constitution.Speaking to reporters, Dr Abdullah emphasized the power of the people in electing and rejecting candidates. “The people have expressed themselves and have made it clear that it’s the people who have the power to elect and reject the candidates,” he said.
Dr Abdullah also addressed the claims made by some individuals who predicted that certain parties would secure 370 or even 400 seats in the Lok Sabha. He strongly criticized these assertions and called for a ban on exit polls. He argued that the people involved in conducting exit polls should wind up their units, as they have created misunderstanding and confusion among the public.
The senior NC leader’s remarks come in the wake of the Lok Sabha election results, which have seen a shift in the political landscape of the country. Dr Abdullah’s prediction of a stronger opposition in the parliament suggests that the coming five years may witness more robust debates and discussions on key issues facing the nation.
Asked about NDA forming a new government, Dr Farooq also stated that he won’t say anything in this regard, let the next government be formed, everything will be visible. “The strength of the new government will be known only when it is formed. The picture will be cleared once the government is formed,” he said.
While replying to a query, Dr Farooq said that the opposition will be much stronger compared to the one he was in the past. “The period of dictatorship has come to an end. We were weak in the Parliament. We were not even being listened to,” he said.
Pertinently, the people threw fractured mandate in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections as none of the parties secured the majority while the coalition BJP led NDA has managed to secure above 290 seats, who are set to form the new government.
It is notable to mention that the discussions between the allies (NDA) have taken place twice so far since June 04 and Narendra Modi is expected to take oath as the prime Minister for the third consecutive term on Sunday.
