Skiing turns tragic: Gulmarg avalanche kills Russian skier; 6 others pulled out alive

SRINAGAR, FEB 22: A tragic avalanche struck the higher reaches of Gulmarg ski resort in north Kashmir on Thursday, killing one Russian skier and injuring another, while six others were rescued along with a local guide.

According to officials, a group of seven Russian skiers along with a local guide had ventured into the off-piste Khilanmarg area of Gulmarg for a ski tour when they were hit by the avalanche in the afternoon.

Teams from the Gulmarg Ski Patrol and local police immediately launched rescue operations with assistance from helicopters. After hours of effort, six Russian skiers were pulled out alive from the snow. However, one skier identified as Hanten, a resident of Moscow, died in the incident.

“Despite the valiant efforts of the rescue team, one Russian skier tragically lost his life due to the avalanche. Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” said a spokesperson for the J&K government.

The avalanche occurred far from the main Kongdoori ski area where the Khelo India Winter Games are underway. The sporting events have continued unaffected by the incident.

The rescued skiers and guide received first aid and medical treatment. One skier suffered minor injuries and is under observation at a local hospital but his condition is stable.

Heavy snowfall since February 17 triggered the avalanche in the higher mountain slopes. Avalanche warnings had been issued by authorities for the region over the past week.

Officials said the off-piste area where the group was skiing is prone to avalanches and is frequented by experienced skiers aware of the risks involved. The Russian embassy is in contact with local authorities over the incident. This is not the first avalanche tragedy to strike Gulmarg’s backcountry area. The ski resort located in the Pir Panjal ranges is considered avalanche-prone during snow seasons.
