‘Like Maa’ Starring Sonali Kulkarni Raises a Powerful Question About Mother-Daughter Bonds
Mumbai (Anil Bedag): Some relationships are shaped not just by words, but by experiences passed down through generations. The bond between a mother and daughter is one such relationship—where love, expectations, fears, values and unconscious patterns often travel from one generation to the next. Filmmaker Neeru Sharma’s 23-minute short film ‘Like Maa’ attempts to explore this deeply sensitive aspect of human relationships. The film stars acclaimed actress Sonali Kulkarni in the lead role. The first poster of the film was recently unveiled, further building curiosity around its story and emotional premise.
Written, produced and directed by Neeru Sharma, the film is set against the backdrop of an upper-middle-class family. At the heart of the story is Anjana, a homemaker played by Sonali Kulkarni. The relationship between Anjana and her teenage daughter forms the emotional core of the film. However, ‘Like Maa’ goes beyond simply exploring the mother-daughter bond. It also raises an important question: how do we unknowingly pass on the experiences, beliefs and social conditioning we have inherited to the next generation?
For Sonali Kulkarni, the project is more than just an opportunity to portray a character. It is an experience of being part of a story whose sensitivity deeply resonated with her. She says that the honesty and emotional sensitivity of ‘Like Maa’ were among the first things that drew her to the project. The warmth with which Neeru Sharma has approached the subject makes the film deeply human and relatable.

The film also features Mehdi Khan, Mehan Soni, Smita Inamdar, Aishwarya Manohar, Hisha Joshi, Nandini Sharma, Komal Khimsaria and Ayaz Khan in important roles.
Produced under the banner of Niruvana Creations, the film is produced by Rajiv Parashar. Aakash Sethi has handled cinematography, Sandeep Kurup is the editor, Kaushal Mahavir has composed the music, and Rucha Deoghar is responsible for production design.
With Sonali Kulkarni’s compelling performance and Neeru Sharma’s sensitive storytelling, ‘Like Maa’ has already emerged with its first poster as a short film that could leave audiences reflecting on their own relationships and the emotional patterns they may have inherited long after the story ends.
