Srinagar, Dec 3: On the occasion of World Disability Day, specially-abled persons held a protest at Press Colony in Srinagar, marking the day as a “Black Day”.
They express their dissatisfaction with the lack of government support and facilities for persons with disabilities (PwDs) in Jammu and Kashmir.
World Disability Day, also known as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), is observed annually on December 3 to promote awareness and support for the rights and well-being of PwDs. However, for the protesters in Srinagar, the occasion served as a grim reminder of the unfulfilled promises and systemic neglect they have faced.
Organized under various disability rights organizations, the protest saw scores of individuals holding placards and banners as they voiced their grievances. They highlighted the pressing challenges they encounter daily, including poor accessibility, high unemployment, inadequate healthcare, and significant delays in implementing disability welfare schemes.
“We are treated as second-class citizens,” one protester said. “Despite repeated assurances from the authorities, our issues remain unaddressed.”
Another participant stated the urgent need for infrastructure development to ensure accessibility in public spaces. “We struggle daily due to the absence of ramps, elevators, and other basic facilities meant for us,” he said.
The protesters demanded the immediate and full implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which guarantees various rights and services to PwDs. They also called for the introduction of special employment schemes, a monthly disability allowance, and improved medical aid tailored to their needs.
Despite the peaceful nature of their demonstration, the protesters expressed their frustration over the lack of attention from the authorities. “Until our rights are recognized and our issues resolved, we will continue to observe this day as a Black Day,” they added.
