Srinagar, Aug 4: Jammu and Kashmir marks the 7th anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganisation of the erstwhile state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The day is being observed with celebrations by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has termed the decision a historic milestone in the region’s transformation.
Senior BJP leader Altaf Thakur said August 5 is “a day of celebration for the people of India.”
“August 5 is a historic day that strengthened national unity and opened a new chapter of development, transparency and equal opportunities for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Today, people are witnessing better infrastructure, improved connectivity, increased investment and greater opportunities for the youth. It is a day of celebration for every Indian,” Thakur said.
Several residents also said they have witnessed positive changes over the past seven years, particularly in infrastructure, road connectivity, tourism and public services.
Mohammad Ashraf, a resident of Srinagar, said, “There has been visible improvement in roads, public infrastructure and tourism. More visitors are coming to Kashmir, which has created opportunities for many families dependent on tourism.”
Rukhsana Begum, a resident of Budgam, said, “Development projects have picked up pace over the past few years. Better roads and improved public facilities have made daily life more convenient.”
Aamir Ahmad, a young entrepreneur from Baramulla, said, “There are more opportunities for young people today. Government schemes, better connectivity and the growth of tourism have encouraged many youth to start their own businesses.”
Since the constitutional changes of August 5, 2019, the Union Territory has witnessed the expansion of road and rail infrastructure, increased tourist arrivals, new investments and the implementation of various central welfare schemes. Supporters of the move say these developments have contributed to greater economic opportunities and improved governance in Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP has planned programmes across Jammu and Kashmir to mark the anniversary, describing it as a significant milestone in the region’s journey towards development, peace and progress.
