Centre to allocate additional 1300 MWs of power to J&K

SRINAGAR, JAN 01: In a breakthrough development, Jammu and Kashmir are set to receive a substantial power boost with an additional allocation of 1300 megawatts (MW) from the central government over the next three months. This announcement comes as a welcome relief for the residents grappling with an acute power crisis during the harsh winter months.

A senior official from the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) stated, “As of November 2023, 2791 MW of power has been allocated to the UT of Jammu and Kashmir from Central Generating Stations. The Ministry of Power has been actively working to address the increased demand for power during the winter months.”

The ongoing power crisis, which had cast a shadow over daily life in Srinagar, prompted the Ministry of Power to devise a comprehensive plan. To meet the heightened demand, the Minister of Power disclosed, “In this regard, the Ministry of Power has made additional allocations of 393 MW for December 2023, 443 MW for January 2024, 443 MW for February 2024, and 593 MW for March 2024 to the UT of Jammu and Kashmir.”

The additional power allocation is expected to mitigate the adverse effects of the power crisis, providing much-needed relief to residents and businesses. The plan demonstrates a proactive approach by the central government to address the unique challenges faced by the region, particularly during the winter season when power demands soar.

The announcement has sparked optimism among the people of Kashmir, who have been enduring cold winter nights without adequate heating and facing disruptions in essential services. Local businesses, which suffered due to erratic power supply, anticipate a revival with the promise of consistent power. As the first tranche of additional power has been allocated in December, Kashmir looks forward to a positive change in its power landscape. The central government’s intervention not only aims to resolve the immediate crisis but also underscores a commitment to strengthening the power infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for its residents.
