SRINAGAR, FEB 23: The government is strengthening the Jammu and Kashmir police, investing in modern gadgets, and increasing personnel numbers.
Over the last several months, the police have purchased modern weapons and bulletproof vehicles to fight effectively against militancy in the valley.
“J&K police has inducted Zen Shoot Edge corner shot pistol. More vehicles fitted with CCTVs, bullet-proof vehicles, latest weaponry, bullet-proof helmets, body cameras have been purchased over the last few months,” a senior police official said.
The official said the J&K police has been equipped with American assault and pistols.
“Modern weapons like SIG Sauer 716 rifles have been inducted in the police,” the official added.
Experts say that the new equipment would provide a massive boost for the anti-terror operations.
J&K police also procured new lightweight bulletproof jackets.
They are also purchasing more modern armoured vehicles that will have a global positioning system installed and also a brand new first-aid kit, along with all the facilities to deal with the injuries during encounters with militants.
“Jammu and Kashmir has also been able to purchase equipment for forensics, cyber cell and raised height of walls of several hundred police stations to provide secure police stations,” the police official said.
They have also been provided with mine-proof vehicles and state-of-the-art drones and CCTVS to increase the vigil across the region.
To strengthen the number of their personnel, the J&K Home Department has also forwarded over 4,000 vacancies for police constable positions to the Services Selection Board.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police last advertised vacancies for the position of constable in 2019.
“This will greatly help in reinforcing the capability of law enforcement to effectively address various security challenges and maintain peace and order,” says an official spokesperson.
He further emphasises that this initiative will not only improve the overall security infrastructure of Jammu and Kashmir but also generate employment opportunities for local youth. There are over 100,000 police personnel in Jammu and Kashmir who have been dealing with the law and order situation and fighting militancy in J&K.
