Srinagar, Feb 21: The countdown has begun for the much-anticipated Khelo India Winter Games 2026, with the world-famous ski resort of Gulmarg buzzing with preparations ahead of the event scheduled to commence from February 23.

Gulmarg has transformed into a hive of activity as officials race against time to ensure seamless arrangements for the national winter sporting extravaganza.

Snow clearance operations are being carried out round-the-clock, while workers are giving final touches to competition venues, including ski slopes and designated snowboarding tracks.

Authorities said infrastructure at key venues has been upgraded, and medical facilities along with emergency response teams have been stationed to ensure athlete safety.

“All necessary arrangements are in place. From grooming of slopes to coordination with various departments, preparations are being monitored closely to host a successful event,” a senior official associated with the Games said.

The Winter Games are expected to draw hundreds of athletes, coaches, and officials from across the country.

Events such as alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, and snowboarding will take center stage, showcasing the region’s growing stature as a premier winter sports destination.

Beyond the sporting arena, the games have brought renewed economic optimism to local businesses. Hotels across Gulmarg and Tangmarg are reporting a sharp rise in bookings.

“We have seen almost full occupancy for the duration of the Games. This event gives a major push to winter tourism and helps sustain us during the lean months,” said a hotel owner in Gulmarg.

Local tour operators and transporters are equally upbeat.

“There has been a noticeable surge in inquiries from visitors and support staff. For small businesses like ours, such national events are a lifeline,” said a Srinagar-based travel operator.

Shopkeepers dealing in winter gear and handicrafts also expect brisk business. “When athletes and tourists come, sales automatically go up. It benefits everyone — from taxi drivers to restaurant owners,” said a local trader.

Security has been tightened across the resort, with coordinated efforts between civil administration and security agencies to ensure a smooth and incident-free event.

The journey of the Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg reflects a steady rise in participation and competition. In the inaugural edition held in March 2020, 1,123 athletes competed in 13 disciplines, with Jammu and Kashmir leading the medal tally. In 2021, participation increased to 1,208 athletes, and the host region clinched 18 gold medals.

Although the 2024 and 2025 editions featured fewer disciplines and participants, the level of competition intensified, with strong performances from teams representing the Army, Himachal Pradesh, and Karnataka.
