J&K sees an uptrend in rate of accidents

SRINAGAR, DEC 20: In the last four years, Jammu and Kashmir have witnessed a concerning trend of road accidents, with a staggering 7,870 reported on the National Highway, according to a report released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Additionally, State Highways in the Union Territory saw over 2,487 crashes during the same period.

The “Road Accident in India 2022” report highlights that Union Territories collectively account for 3 percent of total road accidents in the country. Among them, Jammu & Kashmir reported the highest number of casualties in 2022, with 6,092 incidents, followed by Delhi (5,652) and Puducherry (1,181).
Examining the data on National Highways, the report reveals that Jammu and Kashmir reported 2,081 accidents in 2019, 1,512 in 2020, 1,899 in 2021, and 2,378 in 2022. Despite ranking 17th across India in the number of accidents on National Highways, the region witnessed a concerning increase in accidents over the years.
The grim statistics also show that 384 lives were lost in road accidents on the National Highway in Jammu and Kashmir, with 258 fatalities in 2020, 268 in 2021, and 259 in 2022. This places the Union Territory at the 21st position nationwide in terms of casualties.
Furthermore, the report discloses that 2,620 people were injured on the National Highway in Jammu and Kashmir during road accidents in 2019, 1,740 in 2020, 2,175 in 2021, and 2,319 in 2022, highlighting the severity of the issue.
Turning to State Highways, the report indicates that Jammu and Kashmir reported 610 accidents in 2019, 616 in 2020, 662 in 2021, and 599 in 2022. Despite ranking 19th in the country for accidents on State Highways, the region continues to experience a considerable number of incidents.
Tragically, the data also reveals that 89 lives were lost on Jammu and Kashmir’s State Highways, with 68 deaths in 2020, 78 in 2021, and 84 in 2022, placing the Union Territory at the 21st position nationwide for casualties on State Highways.
The report concludes with alarming figures on injuries, indicating that 746 people were injured on Jammu and Kashmir’s State Highways in 2019, 738 in 2020, 958 in 2021, and a concerning 1,868 in 2022.
These revelations underscore the urgent need for comprehensive measures to improve road safety in Jammu and Kashmir, as efforts to reduce accidents and casualties become imperative for the well-being of its residents.
