SRINAGAR, Nov 17: The Jammu and Kashmir government is set to harness e-commerce potential to boost handicraft exports and empower local artisans, as outlined in its Draft Export Policy 2024, which envisions dedicated digital platforms and specialized training programs for craftspeople.
The policy proposes establishment of dedicated spaces for e-commerce companies to directly engage with artisans, making digital marketing and export channels more accessible. A key component involves comprehensive training for artisans in e-marketing and information and communication technology (ICT) skills, preparing them for online sales and global market access.
“We aim to eliminate intermediaries by directly connecting small-scale producers with retailers through e-marketing,” a senior government official told this newspaper. “This will not only improve profit margins for local producers but also make their products more accessible to global partners.”
The government plans to create a specialized e-commerce platform serving as an online repository for artisans and weavers to showcase their products. Additionally, the introduction of an Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) will function as a neutral network between buyers and sellers, with partner companies managing delivery and payment services.
The policy also envisages designated e-commerce export hubs equipped with business infrastructure specifically designed for digital trade activities. This initiative builds upon the earlier efforts of the Handicrafts and Handloom department, which had launched an e-commerce platform to facilitate direct buyer-artisan connections.
“This marks a significant shift in J&K’s economic landscape,” the official added. “With low-cost digital convenience and no geographical restrictions, regional businesses can now aspire to reach international markets and establish a stronger foothold in the global economy.”
The comprehensive approach aims to revolutionize traditional handicraft marketing by leveraging digital platforms to showcase Kashmir’s unique artisanal products to a worldwide audience while ensuring better returns for local craftspeople.
