Journeying into Ease: Govt’s e-buses transform commuting into a hassle-free adventure

SRINAGAR, JAN 22: In a significant stride towards modernising public transportation and easing daily commutes for residents, the introduction of e-buses in Srinagar has become a game-changer.

Among those benefiting from this revolutionary shift is Zain Mushtaq, whose daily commute from the Parraypora coaching centre to her home in Harwan has become a hassle-free experience.

The e-buses, equipped with spacious interiors, air conditioning, and state-of-the-art CCTV systems for the safety of women, have swiftly altered the landscape of commuting in Srinagar. Zain Mushtaq expressed her delight at the positive impact the e-buses have had on her daily routine.

“Early on, it used to take me two hours to reach the coaching centre from my home, but with the e-bus service, the time taken to commute has halved, and I also feel comfortable while travelling,” said Zain Mushtaq, highlighting the significant time savings and enhanced comfort

As the electric buses gracefully navigate the city streets, a palpable transformation unfolds, bringing relief and a heightened sense of security among female passengers, especially during the bustling peak evening hours. Launched under the Srinagar Smart City project, these electric buses are at the forefront of a modernized public transportation system, prioritizing safety and efficiency.

Equipped with cutting-edge CCTV systems and GPS technology, the electric buses not only promise a comfortable ride but also ensure a secure travel experience. The surveillance infrastructure plays a crucial role in enhancing the safety of passengers, particularly women, offering a level of vigilance that brings reassurance during their journeys.

This initiative, under the Srinagar Smart City project, marks a significant step toward creating a more connected and secure urban environment. The integration of GPS technology not only aids in route optimization but also provides real-time tracking, allowing authorities to monitor the buses closely and respond promptly to any unforeseen situations.

Jamal Manzoor, a resident, finds a newfound sense of security while travelling in the electric bus, thanks to the hi-tech features integrated into the service. However, he raises concerns about the limited number of seats available on these buses and highlights room for improvement in the online booking app, which currently lacks precision in displaying the bus’s exact location.

The key to this enhanced sense of security lies in the advanced features of the electric buses. Five strategically placed cameras, two monitoring the exterior and three focused on the interior, act as vigilant guardians, not only deterring potential misconduct but also ensuring the safety of passengers throughout their journey.

Despite the strides in ensuring security, Jamal Manzoor’s concerns shed light on the need for ongoing enhancements. The limited seating capacity and the perceived shortcomings of the booking app reveal areas that require attention to make the electric bus service more accessible and user-friendly.

One of the commendable aspects of the electric bus service is its active encouragement for women to voice any concerns they may have during their commute. The administration has established various channels, including official channels, direct office visits, and communication through calls and messages on WhatsApp, to ensure a responsive approach to every reported incident.

Navigating the intricacies of Srinagar’s electric bus system has become a breeze for commuters, thanks to the Chalo app. With this user-friendly application, people can effortlessly access essential information about timings, details, and other aspects of their journeys, putting the power of seamless travel right at their fingertips.

The soaring ridership, averaging over 1000 passengers per bus on an average day, underlines the widespread acceptance of the electric bus system and its direct positive impact on the city’s economy. While the service has undoubtedly brought about positive transformations in Srinagar’s public transportation, it is crucial to acknowledge and address existing concerns to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the system’s strengths and areas for growth. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, in November of the previous year, launched a total of 100 electric buses in Srinagar, with 75 operating within the city and 25 connecting Srinagar to other districts.
