Kashmir in Mourning: Anger Flares After Deadly Ganderbal Terror Attack

Srinagar, Oct 21: The Kashmir valley is gripped by intense anger and sorrow following a brutal terror attack in Gagangeer, Ganderbal district, which claimed seven lives and left five others injured.
On Sunday evening, terrorists believed to be in a group of 2-3, launched an attack on workers and staff involved in the construction of the Z-Morh Tunnel. Among the dead were employees hailing from Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Jammu, including a safety manager and a mechanical manager. A local doctor from Budgam, central Kashmir, was also killed in the attack. The five injured victims are receiving treatment at SKIMS Hospital in Srinagar, and their condition is reported to be stable.
The attack has sparked outrage across Kashmir, with political leaders, religious groups, and civilians uniting in condemning the act.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah both denounced the barbaric violence and also visited the injured at SKIMS Soura. National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah also strongly condemned the attack, pointing fingers at Pakistan for continuing to instigate violence in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Pakistan must cease supporting such terror activities if it wishes to foster friendly relations with India,” Abdullah said. He emphasized that there can be no meaningful dialogue between New Delhi and Islamabad unless Pakistan stops sponsoring terrorism in the region. “I do not know what action India should take; that is for the central government to decide. We have been living through this for years now. I’ve seen it for 30 years, and I have urged them to stop this, but their mentality hasn’t changed,” he added.
Leaders across the political spectrum have echoed these sentiments. CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami and BJP leader Sunil Sharma both expressed their shock and grief over the killings, calling for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Religious figures in Kashmir have also spoken out. Kashmir’s chief cleric and Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq condemned the attack, highlighting that such violence is against the teachings of Islam. “Islam strongly deplores such inhuman acts. Every life is precious, and to lose lives in this manner is extremely painful,” said Mirwaiz. He said that the incident serves as a grim reminder of the endless cycle of violence and uncertainty that Kashmiris have endured for decades.
Mirwaiz offered prayers for the injured and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, hoping for a swift recovery for those wounded in the attack.
Similarly, Moulana Abbas, another prominent religious leader, expressed his grief and sorrow over the brutal killings. He condemned the violence, calling for an end to the bloodshed in the region.
Aga Syed Hassan Al-Musvi Al-Safvi, President of the Jammu and Kashmir Anjuman Sharia Shian and Founder of the Anjuman Interfaith Dialogue Chapter, also condemned the attack. He described the incident as a cowardly act that has once again ignited public anger and deepened the sense of alienation felt by many Kashmiris. “These killings have been part of Kashmir’s tragic history, and this latest attack only adds to our collective grief. There must be an end to these senseless killings of innocent civilians. Such violence is in direct contrast to our religious teachings and beliefs,” said Al-Safvi. He offered his sincere prayers for the families affected by the attack.
The attack has also provoked widespread anger on social media. Many Kashmiris took to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to express their outrage. “This is so shameful. We all must condemn this act. It is unacceptable. We hope the security forces eliminate the terrorists at the earliest,” posted Zubair Ahmad on X.
