Srinagar, June 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming two-day visit to Kashmir, his first since securing a third consecutive term, has raised hopes for a fresh approach towards the troubled region. His participation in the International Yoga Day celebrations on June 21 has taken a backseat, with expectations building around a potential policy reset.
“We are cautiously optimistic that the Prime Minister’s visit could mark the beginning of a new chapter for Kashmir,” said Farooq Ahmad Dar, a trader representative. “The business community has suffered immensely due to the volatility, and we hope this outreach translates into concrete measures for economic revival.”
“We want to see the Prime Minister reach out to all stakeholders, including those with opposing viewpoints,” said Ishfaq Majid, a college student in Srinagar. “A sustainable solution can only be found through open and inclusive discussions.”
“We’ve seen these high-profile visits before, but they’ve rarely translated into tangible benefits for the people of Kashmir,” said Arshid Hussain, a young entrepreneur. “This time, we hope the Prime Minister goes beyond photo ops and actually listens to the voices on the ground.”
Security has been tightened across the region ahead of Modi’s arrival, with authorities keen to avoid any potential disruptions or protests during the visit.
Political analysts suggest that the Prime Minister’s actions during the trip could set the tone for his government’s approach towards Kashmir in this new term.
“The Prime Minister has a unique opportunity to redefine the narrative around Kashmir,” said Ufera a political science student. “Whether he chooses to double down on the militaristic approach or opts for a more conciliatory stance will be closely watched.”
As the Prime Minister prepares to touch down in the Valley, the hopes, skepticism, and expectations of the Kashmiri people remain intertwined, with all eyes on how this visit unfolds and the potential implications it may have for the region’s future.
