No Eid prayers at Eidgah: Waqf Chairperson

Srinagar, Mar 27: As the Eid prayers have not been offered at Eidgah Srinagar for the last several years, this year too, the Waqf Board Chairperson, Dr Darakshan Andrabi Wednesday said the mandatory congregational Eid prayers will not be held at Eidgah, here.
Talking to the media persons, Andrabi said that she wants to make it clear that Eidgah has been turned into a playfield and such is the situation that the prayers are not possible in the ground, which is not even flat.

“There is no doubt that peace prevails in Kashmir, but the situation in Eidgah is not conducive for the Eid prayers,” she said, adding that the renovation work will be taken up soon.
“We have already issued tenders for the construction of a pulpit at Eidgah. The Eidgah will be renovated soon and will be made favourable for the Eid prayers,” she added.
For the past several years, authorities have disallowed Eid prayers on one or the other pretext. In 2010, violence rocked Srinagar after Eid prayers were held at the Eidgah with hundreds of protesters pelting stones and clashing with the police.
Pertinently, Chairperson of Jammu & Kashmir Waqf Board visited the historic Pather Masjid in Old City area of Srinagar, which is owned by Waqf Board and being a protected historic monument, is being looked after by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Andrabi held deliberations with the local society representatives about the facilities for those who offer their prayers at the Masjid and also about the basic restoration needs so that this historic site remains safe.
Dr Andrabi issued orders to the Waqf Board authorities for arranging new elegant matting of the whole prayer area before Eid festival.
“We will take up the proposal of restoration of this historic Masjid with ASI soon. This monument is still a live prayer centre and I congratulate the local population for taking care of this protected site and keeping it tidy and clean. I am hopeful that the restoration of the site is allowed by the ASI as we are going to take up the proposal with them,” Dr Darakhshan said.
