SRINAGAR, MAR 05: The Government of India’s unwavering commitment to providing accessible and affordable healthcare to all its citizens has borne remarkable fruit in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a staggering Rs 1756 crore has been allocated for the free treatment of patients in the J&K, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s pursuit of equitable healthcare.
According to officials, the funds have been instrumental in ensuring that no individual in Jammu and Kashmir is deprived of essential medical care due to financial constraints. This initiative has not only alleviated the burden of medical expenses for countless families but has also paved the way for improved health outcomes and a stronger healthcare infrastructure.
The Prime Minister’s focus on quality healthcare has been a driving force behind this endeavour, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that every citizen, irrespective of their socio-economic status, has access to top-notch medical facilities and treatments.
“Healthcare is a fundamental right, and we must ensure that no one is left behind,” said an official adding “The success we have witnessed in Jammu and Kashmir is a testament to our commitment to building a healthier and more prosperous nation for all.”
The impact of this initiative has been far-reaching, with numerous reports of lives being saved and families being spared from financial ruin due to exorbitant medical costs. The free treatment has covered a wide range of medical conditions, from critical illnesses to routine procedures, providing a safety net for the most vulnerable sections of society.
Government officials have lauded the positive outcomes of this initiative and have pledged to continue their efforts to ensure that quality healthcare remains a top priority across the nation. As India continues to make strides in its healthcare sector, the success story of Jammu and Kashmir serves as a beacon of hope and a model for other states and Union Territories to emulate.
Launched in 2020, SEHAT provides health insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh per family for free to all people living in Jammu and Kashmir, surpassing the national Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) by extending coverage to the entire population of the region.
With over 83.5 lakh residents issued SEHAT golden cards, individuals can access cashless treatment at any of the 229 empanelled hospitals, including both public and private facilities, ensuring widespread access to quality healthcare services. Since its inception, approximately 10.70 lakh patients have received treatment for various conditions under SEHAT, including cancer, cardiac ailments, chronic kidney diseases, and more. This scheme has been instrumental in providing financial relief to patients who otherwise would struggle to afford treatment for life-consuming and life-threatening illnesses.
