Srinagar Mar 04: The Prime Minister’s Vishwakarma Yojana, which aims to empower and enhance the skills of the craftsmen community, has received immense response in Jammu and Kashmir.
The PM’s Vishwakarma scheme provides formal recognition to artisans and crafts people through the issuance of certificates and ID cards.
This recognition not only validates their skills and expertise but also opens doors to new opportunities and market access.
Since the launch of the scheme, officials said thousands of people have applied to avail benefits under the scheme.
Mehak Jan, a resident of Baramulla, underwent tailoring training as part of a program.
She said, “Throughout the training, I received a stipend, and afterward, I was provided with a modern toolkit for free. Currently, I am earning well through tailoring work at home. Our future plan is to purchase a shop and continue our work there.”
Officials said J &K’s proactive implementation of PMVY serves as a beacon of hope for the UT’s artisanal community. “By providing comprehensive support and fostering an environment conducive to skill development and entrepreneurship, the scheme paves the way for a brighter future for J&K’s talented artisans,” a senior official said.
The government has started various centres where these youth are given training. The basic training spans five to seven days, while the advanced training delves deeper into specific crafts and lasts for 15 days or more.
“This structured approach ensures continuous learning and skill development, enabling artisans to stay competitive and relevant in the market. To further empower Viswakarmas, the scheme provides them with a daily stipend of Rs 500 during training. Additionally, upon successful completion of the program, each trainee receives a free modern toolkit worth Rs 15,000. This financial support alleviates financial constraints and equips artisans with the necessary tools to kick start their entrepreneurial ventures,” the official said.
The Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana was launched by the Central government in September 2023 with an aim to recognise artisans and craftspeople through PM Vishwakarma certificates and ID cards.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the government has also framed committees for effective implementation of the scheme.
The UT level monitoring committee is headed by Administrative Secretary Industries and Commerce Department and has 13 members from various departments.
The committee has been directed to ensure active participation of stakeholder departments and agencies of the UT facilitating implementation of the scheme.
The Scheme covers artisans and craftspeople engaged in 18 trades, viz. Carpenter (Suthar/Badhai), Boat Maker, Armourer, Blacksmith (Lohar), Hammer and Tool Kit Maker, Locksmith, Goldsmith (Sonar), Potter (Kumhaar), Sculptor (Moortikar, stone carver), Stone breaker, Cobbler (Charmkar)/ Shoesmith/Footwear artisan, Mason (Rajmistri), Basket/Mat/Broom Maker/Coir Weaver, Doll & Toy Maker (Traditional), Barber (Naai), Garland maker (Malakaar), Washerman (Dhobi), Tailor (Darzi) and Fishing Net Maker.
