Record tourist influx breathes new life into Kashmir’s economy

Srinagar, June 3: Kashmir, the famed paradise on earth, is witnessing an unprecedented surge in tourist arrivals, providing a much-needed boost to the region’s local economy. In the last six months alone, over 13 lakh tourists have flocked to Kashmir, generating lakhs of jobs and infusing new energy into the tourism industry, a vital contributor to the region’s GDP.
The resurgence in tourism post-COVID can be attributed to the government’s proactive promotional activities and the improvement in the ground situation. However, what has truly added to the record influx is the scorching heat wave sweeping across India, with Kashmir’s cool climes providing a welcome respite for tourists seeking an escape from the sweltering temperatures.
“I have come from Kanpur, where the temperature is hovering close to 40 degrees Celsius. Here, it’s less than 20 degrees, and we feel like we’re in heaven,” exclaimed Pari Kana, a tourist enjoying Kashmir’s beauty with her family and children.
The good influx of tourists has resulted in most hotels in Kashmir being jam-packed, with vehicle owners and shikarawallahs (traditional boat operators) experiencing a surge in bookings and earnings. “The good tourist influx means that money is circulating in Kashmir, and it helps the local economy grow,” said Bashir Ahmad, a hotelier who is planning to expand his hotel network after recording strong business over the past two years.
The revival of the tourism sector has breathed new life into Kashmir’s economy, generating employment opportunities and spurring economic growth. Local businesses, from hotels and restaurants to handicrafts and transportation services, are reaping the benefits of the influx, with increased revenue and improved prospects for expansion and development.
However, the surge in tourist arrivals has also highlighted the need for sustainable tourism practices and robust infrastructure to cater to the growing demand. Authorities and stakeholders are working together to ensure that the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage are preserved while providing world-class amenities and experiences to visitors.
As Kashmir continues to captivate tourists with its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality, the region’s economy is poised for a remarkable transformation, promising a brighter future for its people and a thriving tourism industry.
