Srinagar, Feb 25: Authorities have intensified market inspections across the Kashmir Valley during the ongoing holy month of Ramadan, with enforcement teams conducting surprise checks to ensure food safety and quality.
A joint inspection drive was carried out in Bemina by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (West) Irfan Ahmad along with Food Checking Squad Officer Yamin Ahmed. The team inspected several shops dealing in fruits, bakery items, flowers, and other essential commodities.
During the inspection, officials found instances of spoiled and expired food items, which were immediately seized and destroyed on the spot. Shopkeepers found violating norms faced strict action, officials said.
“We are carrying out intensive market checking to ensure that people get safe and hygienic food, especially during Ramadan,” said SDM West Irfan Ahmad.
The inspection teams closely examined storage conditions, expiry dates, and overall hygiene standards in the markets, warning traders against any malpractice.
“Any compromise with public health will not be tolerated. Strict action will be taken against those found selling substandard or expired items,” he added.
Officials said that the drive will continue throughout Ramadan, with increased vigilance across markets in Srinagar. Special inspection squads will also remain active during Eid to ensure consumers are not exposed to unsafe food products.
The administration has urged traders to maintain quality standards and follow regulations, emphasizing that safeguarding public health remains a top priority during the festive season.
