Several social media offenders under cyber police radar

SRINAGAR, DEC 01: The Jammu and Kashmir Cyber Police is identifying the individuals involved in various cybercrimes, ranging from online harassment to spreading fake news and inciting violence through social media platforms, Morning Kashmir has learnt.
Sources within the Cyber Police reveal that the offenders are being closely monitored, and investigations are underway to gather substantial evidence for legal action.
The move comes as part of the authorities’ commitment to ensuring the safety and security of citizens in the region, especially in the wake of the increasing influence of social media on public opinion and community dynamics.
According to Cyber Police officials, they are identifying offenders responsible for disseminating false information and engaging in activities that could potentially disturb the peace and communal harmony in the region.
The authorities have stressed the importance of responsible social media usage and have warned that strict action will be taken against those found guilty of violating cyber laws.
One of the officials in the Cyber Police said that they are committed to maintaining law and order in the digital space.
“Social media has become a powerful tool, and while it offers numerous benefits, it also poses certain risks. Our aim is to identify and take action against those misusing these platforms to spread misinformation and hatred,” he said.
The Cyber Police have urged citizens to report any suspicious online activities and provide information that may aid in the ongoing investigations. They have assured the public that confidentiality will be maintained, and individuals who come forward with credible information will be protected.
Legal experts weigh in on the situation, emphasizing the need for a balance between freedom of expression and preventing the misuse of social media platforms. They stress the importance of enforcing cyber laws to deter potential offenders and maintain a safe online environment.
Sources said that the Cyber Police are working closely with social media platforms to trace the digital footprint of the offenders and gather evidence that can stand up in court.
The authorities have not disclosed specific details about the number of offenders or the nature of their offences, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing investigations.
“With the growing dependence on online platforms for communication, information dissemination, and social interactions, the need for robust cyber security measures has become more critical,” a top police official said.
Speaking about the initiative, he highlighted the importance of proactive measures in the face of evolving cyber threats.
“Our primary goal is to safeguard the digital well-being of the citizens of Kashmir. The prevalence of cybercrimes and the rapid spread of misinformation on social media necessitate continuous monitoring to identify and neutralize potential threats before they escalate,” he said.
The Cyber Police Kashmir has deployed advanced monitoring tools and technologies to scan social media handles, track suspicious activities, and identify potential risks to the cybersecurity infrastructure.
“The monitoring efforts are not intended to infringe on individuals’ privacy but rather to ensure a secure online environment for the community.
Furthermore, the Cyber Police has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or information that may pose a threat to digital security. The public is encouraged to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to create a safer online space for everyone,” the official said.
Sources said that senior officials within the police department have instructed field officers to take decisive action against individuals found spreading misinformation through social media platforms.
A high-ranking official, stationed at the Director General Police office in Srinagar, confirmed ongoing police monitoring of all social networking sites. This official, who preferred not to be named, revealed clear orders to collect details of individuals spreading misinformation within the Union Territory.
The official underscored that the police are well aware of the happenings on social media platforms, emphasizing a clear message that legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to spread rumours or engage in illegal activities.
To prevent the misuse of social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, the Kashmir Cyber Police has already registered several cases. These cases were based on continuous reports of social media misuse, violating government orders and causing disruptions in Jammu and Kashmir,” said the official.
As the Cyber Police continue their efforts to track down social media offenders, the public remains vigilant, hopeful that these measures will contribute to a safer and more secure online environment in Jammu and Kashmir.
