Special drive for Panchayat Electoral Roll Revision from Jan 15: J&K SEC

SRINAGAR, JAN 09: The State Election Commission (SEC) in Jammu and Kashmir revealed its plans to embark on a special campaign for the annual summary revision of panchayat electoral rolls, slated to commence on January 15.

This strategic initiative underscores the commission’s commitment to ensuring the accuracy and inclusivity of the electoral rolls, with a specific focus on updating information and incorporating eligible individuals into the democratic process.

The scheduled launch on January 15 marks the beginning of an extensive effort to review and refine the panchayat electoral rolls, aligning with the commission’s dedication to upholding the integrity of the electoral system in the region.

The primary objective of this endeavour is to integrate eligible individuals, particularly those who attained the age of 18 by January 1, 2024, into the electoral rolls, ensuring a comprehensive and accurate representation of the electorate.

State Election Commissioner B R Sharma elucidated, “The State Election Commission is launching a dedicated campaign for the annual summary revision of panchayat electoral rolls. The purpose is to enroll young individuals, who will reach the age of 18 on or before January 1, 2024, into the panchayat rolls.”

The comprehensive campaign is slated to begin on January 15 and will extend until February 5, providing a three-week window for the inclusion of eligible voters. As an integral part of this initiative, four special camps are scheduled on January 27 and 28, as well as February 3 and 4. These camps are strategically organized to streamline the registration process and facilitate the seamless inclusion of eligible voters into the electoral rolls.

Commissioner Sharma emphasized that the revised electoral rolls, enriched with the details of the newly enrolled voters, are scheduled for publication on February 26. This timeline ensures transparency and accessibility to the updated information, fostering a more participatory and informed democratic process.

Understanding the significance of citizens’ active involvement in the electoral process, Sharma urged all eligible individuals to register themselves during the campaign period, exercising their fundamental right to vote and contributing to the democratic fabric of the region.

With the conclusion of the term of existing panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, the stage is now set for the comprehensive revision and update of electoral rolls. The last panchayat elections in the region occurred in 2018, and this initiative by the State Election Commission reflects a commitment to maintaining an accurate and up-to-date electoral register. This commitment is pivotal in ensuring a vibrant, inclusive, and reflective democratic process within the Union Territory. The SEC’s specialized campaign aligns seamlessly with broader democratic principles, aiming to facilitate universal suffrage, encourage civic engagement, and ensure the electoral process remains responsive to the changing demographics of Jammu and Kashmir.
