Srinagar, May 10: The stage is all set for the holding of elections in the Srinagar Parliamentary constituency on May 13, as political parties will wind up their poll campaigning by 6 PM on Saturday.
On May 13, at least 17.4 lakh voters will decide the fate of 24 candidates contesting from Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency.
Once considered a bastion of the National Conference, it is likely to witness a triangular contest.
In 2019, there was only a 13% voter turnout. The National Conference leaders have represented the constituency for the maximum number of times. NC president Farooq Abdullah is currently the MP from the Central Kashmir Lok Sabha seat.
Politicians believe that people will come out to vote in good numbers this year. Candidates have been holding roadshows and addressing gatherings.
While there seems enthusiasm among voters to cast their vote, authorities in Srinagar have taken an innovative approach to encourage voter participation by setting up 32 theme-based polling booths.
These booths, coordinated with colors such as pink, red, and blue, cater to specific voter demographics like women, Persons with Disabilities (PwD), and young voters.
Additionally, eight booths are dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability. District Election Officer (DEO) Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat says that these booths will feature vibrant message boards, creating a festive atmosphere to enhance the voting experience and promote inclusivity in Srinagar.
Meanwhile, IGP Kashmir V K Bhirdi on Friday said that comprehensive security measures have been implemented for the upcoming polls, including inter-district check-points and increased area surveillance. Bhirdi assured that all necessary arrangements have been finalized to facilitate smooth polling and encourage high voter turnout. He emphasized that stringent security protocols, in line with Election Commission of India guidelines, have been put in place to maintain peace throughout the election phases in Kashmir. Additionally, he stated that security deployment has been adjusted accordingly and efforts will be intensified to thwart any disruptive elements in the region.
