Tap water to every household: 3000 schemes under execution in J&K

Srinagar, Sep 01: At least, 3000 schemes costing Rs 13,000 crore are under execution in Jammu and Kashmir to provide every household access to tap water.
As per the official details available with Morning Kashmir, there are presently 3000 schemes at various stages under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) scheme. These are meant to provide every household access to tap water.
The figures reveal that these schemes are costing Rs 13,000 crore.
“Functional household tap connections coverage is 12.92 lakh households. Every allotment is made through e-tendering only. An expenditure of Rs 2500 crore has been made during the last twelve months with third-party monitoring and complete transparency,” the documents read.
Jal Shakti Department is entrusted with the responsibility of providing a safe drinking water facility to all the human settlements, by tapping the available water resources and treating the same through filtration and chemicals through a network of pipes.
However, officials say that one of the major challenges faced by the government is reaching every household in rural habitations, which often include scattered and high-altitude areas.
The Jal Shakti Abhiyan was launched by the Ministry of Jal Shakti in 2019. It is a campaign for water conservation and water security in the country through a collaborative effort of various ministries of the Government of India and state governments. The focus of the campaign is on water-stressed districts and blocks.
Jal Jeevan Mission, a central government initiative under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aims to ensure access to piped water for every household in India.
One key plan is to spend funds from the rural job scheme MGNREGA, the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana and the Integrated Watershed Management Programme for the renovation of water bodies in rural areas.
